VacationLab vs. Smart Moms:
Which one is the best for Travel Agents?

Want to join a host agency?
You are in the right place.

Here at VacationLab, our mission is simple. We help travel advisors grow, succeed and enjoy what they do. We are one of the fastest growing companies in the industry, and we got here by staying transparent, offering support and giving our advisors the tools they need to shine.

Below are the three pillars that make VacationLab such an amazing place for travel agents worldwide.

Support

Once you join us, you will have access to weekly team meetings and calls with other travel agents. Have a question? You can schedule a call with the CEO at any time and he will be happy to help you. Our sister website, Famvia, also provides more than 500 free guides and reviews from the most popular travel destinations in the world, which will support your growth and help you build a strong client base.

Second step to become a Vacation Lab advisor

Social Media

VacationLab offers new webinars and courses every month that are created just for you and remain available for life. We also have a social media wizard (hi, Sofia!) who will be happy to set up a call with you. All of this is here to help you get started and develop your expertise in the way that works best for you.

Third step to become a Vacation Lab advisor

No fees, ever

We do not charge entry fees or monthly fees, and we never will. At VacationLab, you start at a 70% commission split, and it only goes up from there. We pay on time, stay transparent and make sure your contracts and payments are always clear and straightforward.

Smart Moms

Tricky sign up process

Examining the process to become a Smart Moms travel agent is a little tricky. You click a button to apply and join their agency, but you do not get immediate access to important information like commission splits, training details or how to get support. In fact, it is extremely hard to find clear information online about their commission structure and payment methods, and most of what you will find comes from forum posts rather than official sources. Some users on Reddit and other travel agent forums mention that Smart Moms pays around 55 percent commission, which is considered low for the industry standard.

You MUST be a Disney expert

Smart Moms asks upfront for you to have certain skills, like being extremely motivated, being super creative and already having strong knowledge of Walt Disney World. However, there is no clear explanation of how they will help you build or expand that knowledge. In other words, you are expected to already be a Disney expert before joining them.

Unclear training program

The sign up process also does not go into detail about their training program. Smart Moms does mention that they will eventually guide you on how to find leads, but before that you need to be accepted and pass a Certification Test. There is no upfront information about what the test includes, but it appears to focus mainly on questions about Disney World theme parks and resorts. The application form includes around twenty questions before you can submit it to Smart Moms, and there is no option to schedule a call with a team member to ask questions prior to applying.

Still got questions on joining VacationLab?

What makes VacationLab better than Smart Moms when it comes to costs?

Smart Moms provides no information on their website about entry or monthly fees, and you cannot find any details during the sign up process
‍
VacationLab has zero entry fees and no monthly costs. Zero. Nothing. Nada. You don’t pay to join us, and we are more than happy to help you succeed as a travel agent and build a strong client base. As we said before, your success is our success, so we always have each other’s back. We also pay on time, and any questions about contracts or payments can be discussed with the CEO whenever you like.

What makes VacationLab better than Smart Moms when it comes to commissions?

Chevron icon to indicate an accordion of text

Smart Moms provides no information about commissions on their official website or during the sign up process. In fact, the company is very tight-lipped when it comes to commission splits. However, online reports on forums like Reddit suggest that Smart Moms pays travel agents only around 55 percent in commissions, which is considered very low compared to industry standards.

At VacationLab, we keep things simple and transparent. Every travel agent who joins starts with at least a 70% commission, and experienced agents can earn even more. With time and a growing client base, you can increase your earnings up to 80%, all with no entry or monthly fees.

What makes VacationLab better than Smart Moms when it comes to training?

Chevron icon to indicate an accordion of text

Smart Moms offers some form of in-house training, but there is no information about it on their official website. The sign up process mentions that after joining, they will teach you how to find leads and how to quote guests so they always say yes, but there is no explanation of how this training is delivered. It is unclear whether it is through webinars, videos, or one-on-one calls.

At VacationLab, we offer over 30 hours of self-paced courses you can watch online, along with monthly courses, weekly team meetings and webinars covering a variety of topics. We also provide specialized courses, like social media-focused training, and you can always set up a call with our CEO, our social media expert, or other travel agents.

What makes VacationLab better than Smart Moms when it comes to creating a community?

Chevron icon to indicate an accordion of text

Smart Moms focuses heavily on Disney. Most, if not all, of their travel agents are women, and you are expected to already be a Disney expert before joining, which narrows the community. You also need to pass a certification test and book your first trip to be considered a new agent. They mention having a Facebook group and a travel agent community, but that’s about it.

Being a travel agent should be fun, and you should know who’s part of your family. At VacationLab, we have a private Slack channel running all day and team calls more than once a week, with the CEO present and ready to answer your questions. You can also set up calls with our content creator, social media expert, or fellow travel agents. Need a guide focused only on luxury resorts at Disney World? Talk to us, and we’ll get it done in no time so you can share it with your guests. After all, we’re here to help each other.

What makes VacationLab better than Smart Moms when it comes to creating content for travellers?

Chevron icon to indicate an accordion of text

Smart Moms has no content on their website for guests to browse or get excited about trips. Clicking on destinations like Disney only takes you to an official mini-website with very brief information about the theme parks, usually just a couple of lines. Smart Moms does maintain an Instagram page, where they occasionally post a few tips.

VacationLab does things differently. We have a sister website called Famvia that is entirely dedicated to travelers and content. We offer more than 700 free guides and reviews covering the most popular theme parks, cruises and beach resorts in the world. Have a client who wants to go on a Celebrity Cruises vacation? Send them our planning, dining and room guides, most of which are around 2000 words and packed with helpful information and details. We also have curated reviews of top cruise ships, resorts and theme park rides, with ratings and clear pros and cons for each one. Hagrid’s Motorbike Adventure received a perfect 10 out of 10, and the same goes for Fantasmic at Hollywood Studios. Curious to see what else earned a perfect score? Well, we will not spoil that here.

What makes VacationLab better than Smart Moms when it comes to perks?

Chevron icon to indicate an accordion of text

There is no information about perks for travel agents when joining Smart Moms.

At VacationLab, we offer not only the best experiences for your guests, but also the best benefits for travel agents. You have the opportunity to access special deals for your guests and save on your own personal travel. On top of that, we run giveaways from time to time and offer a perk called Tier Skip. Every month, we select three special travel suppliers, and you can earn bonus commission and prizes when you sell them. For example, if you are earning 70 percent commission and the travel supplier of the month is Disney World, selling Disney World vacations could give you 75 percent or more in commission. Yes, that’s definitely a great way to boost your income!
